Scholar, Sage, Saint: The Legacy of John Henry Newman (NINS Second Series)

Bringing together some of the world’s most distinguished Newman scholars, this volume investigates Newman’s legacy as a “scholar,” a “sage,” and a “saint.” The chapters comprising this volume span a range of disciplines and methodologies. Among the authors are philosophers, theologians, and historians, all of whom teach and publish within their respective disciplines. These same authors are also an ecumenical group, which provides a range of perspectives within the various disciplines. The chapters are generally organized according to discipline and scope. The book begins with Simon Skinner’s chapter, which looks at how historians and commentators alike have “framed” Newman anachronistically. Chapters two through four historically contextualize various aspects of Newman’s life and writings, and chapters five through eight are reception histories, broadly speaking. The authors of chapters nine through twelve incorporate systematic theological and philosophical approaches to their reading of Newman and his context.
