Sakya Pandita (1182- 1251) was a great scholar of Tibet in 13th century. He wrote the book as The Jewel Treasure of Elegant Sayings, known also as Sakya Legshed is one of the most popular book in Tibet. The main theme is on how to live a wholesome life. Since Sakya Legshed is written in stanzas, it is not easy for less educated people to understand it and fully appreciate it. There are many references to Indian mythological stories. Therefore, two of Sakya Pandita's disciples, Rinchen Pal (1143-1217) and Marton Chogyal(?) selected 50 stanzas which have same meaning in Indian literature and wrote a commentary, which is known as The Commentary of the Jewel Treasure of Elegant Sayings known as The Commentary of Sakya Legshed. My work on Sakya Legshed (this book) has two parts. (a)The translation of the commentary of Sakya Legshed into Japanese. (b)The sources of these stories of Elegant Sayings in Indian literature which I found in THE TIBETAN TRIPITAKA, PEKING EDITION and translated into Japanese. I also studied the English translations of Panchtantra, Hitopadesha and Katha Sarit Sagara and found the same in these sources. I have indicated the first page of each of them and wrote the chapter name. Read more
